Pushpa: The Rise movie review: Allu Arjun leads the way in this action packed musical
What: Pushpa is the biggest release of South India as it has Icon star Allu Arjun in a mass role for the first time. The film is directed by Sukumar and has Rashmika and Fahadh Faasil in key roles. DSP has scored the music and Mythri Movies is the production house. The film has also been released in multiple languages along with Hindi and here is the original Telugu review in detail.
Pushpa Movie Synopsis
Pushpa is set in the Chittoor region of Andhra Pradesh. A small area in this region is famous for red sandalwood and a big mafia operates here.
In comes Pushparaj( Allu Arjun) who is a lorry driver. With his daring attitude, he soon becomes a right hand of a rich smuggler. But as time passes by, he decides to go on his own and takes on the biggest Don called Mangalam Seenu (Sunil).
This is where Pushparaj lands in big trouble. If this was not enough, Pushparaj also has to face a crazy forest officer played by Fahadh Faasil. How will Pushparaj deal with these problems is the basic synopsis of Pushpa.
Analysis
Pushpa is a mass drama with loads of action and banks heavily on Allu Arjun's star power. There were high expectations on Allu Arjun and does not disappoint one bit. The star hero is stunning as Pushparaj and mouths mass dialogues in a solid manner.
The film has a smuggling backdrop and shows the rise of Pushpa as a smuggler in the first half. But in all this, the needed conflict point is missing. One would expect a solid villain to confront Pushpa but that does not happen to make the film pale in many areas.
The runtime of the film is also an issue. As there is not much drama, the three-hour runtime looks dragged. The first half which showcases Pushpa's rise is very good and has solid songs and, action as well.
But it is the latter half which drags. The film's main villain is weak and an actor like Fahadh Faasil is brought in late. By this time, the film loses steam as well. But it is Allu Arjun who keeps us engaged with his swag and dialogue delivery.
Performances
Allu Arjun is the biggest asset and has given his career-best performance in Pushpa. He goes de-glam and fights like never before. He did not dance much in the film as well. National crush, Rashmika is so cute as Srivalli and shares solid chemistry with Allu Arjun.
Ajay Ghosh is great as the antagonist and evokes fear. The other villain, Sunil is not at all utilized well in the proceedings. Samantha, the star heroine looks hot in a special song. Last but not the least, Fahadh Faasil is good but as he gets only two scenes there is nothing much he can do.
Technicalities
Pushpa has some very good music and all the songs are nicely placed in the narrative. DSP has given hit tracks but sadly his background music is not impressive. The camera department needs a special mention as the village visuals and fights look stunning. Dialogues are fun and have heavy regional slang. The costumes are amazing and the editing is below par. Sukumar and his screenplay are dull in the second half and down the tempo.
Pushpa is lavish, has great songs and fights. Allu Arjun leads from the front and he keeps the audience engaged with his crazy act.
But the slow second half and lack of riveting drama takes the film down making Pushpa just an okay watch. Just go in with low expectations.
