Nadanna Sambhavam review: The Biju Menon starrer waltzes as a social comic satire on a slice-of-life template
"The Biju Menon starrer waltzes as a social comic satire on a slice-of-life template"
Broaching on social prejudices, director Vishnu Narayan's ‘Nadanna Sambhavam’ is a biting comedy which keeps you engaged with its slice-of-life tone.
A new entrant Sreekumaran Unni (Biju Menon) in Ernakulam's housing society invites curiosity, envy and even wrath from the fellow male members when he gets pally with the women in the neighbourhood.
Unni is a people's person. He is a charmer" says his broadminded wife, Roshy (Shruti Ramachandran) when asked by some ladies who flock around him for amicable advice and casual conversations.
Unni's growing popularity with the women breeds insecurity in their husbands, strikingly more with Lincoln (Sudhi Koppa) and Ajith (Sooraj Venjaramoodu) who suspect him to be a compulsive womanizer and plot a sting operation that spirals into unpleasant consequences.
In his sophomore venture, Vishnu Narayan gazes at a deep-rooted social issue with comic overtones which makes it accessible for the viewer to weigh in both the sides of the coin. But the setting is very localized to the residential complex and leaves little scope for the DoP to flex its wings and the female protagonists to be explored more. Nadanna Sambhavam stays skewed to the battle of machismo.
Biju's Unni is understated, and his brevity makes him more believable, barring the physicality for a cool dude demeanour. After Thalavan, I was not convinced to see a middle aged person with grey hair to have a little daughter barely 6-7 years old and a young wife looking a decade younger than him.
Sooraj's part has glaring shades of toxic masculinity, and he does play it with a lot of sincerity, inciting loath and hatred for his character. The film draws its humour from Rajesh Gopinathan's sharp script, focusing on the police station investigation and a handful of detours – involving the circle inspector on a picnic and demonstrating the art of making chicken in a coconut kernel.
Nadanna Sambhavam also stars Lijomol Jose (Filmfare award winner, Jai Bhim 2021), Shruti Ramachandran
