Acharya is a film that was being awaited for multiple reasons. Firstly, Chiranjeevi is doing a film after a long gap and the other thing is that he is sharing screen space with his son Ram Charan for the first time. The film has Pooja Hegde as the heroine and is directed by Koratala Siva who has given all super hits in his career so far. The film has been released today with much hype and hysteria in the Telugu states. Let's review it.
Acharya Plot
Acharya is about a temple town that is quite religious and precious for many. But one man who is trying hard to defame it with his activities is Basava(Sonu Sood). When the devotees are praying for something good to happen, Acharya(Chiranjeevi) enters the scene and saves the poor. Basava is upset with the entry of Acharya but he comes to know that Acharya is on a special mission sent by Siddha(Ram Charan). What is that mission and how does Acharya fulfill it is the story of Acharya?
Performances
Chiranjeevi is a legend when it comes to performance and screen presence. He is amazing as Acharya and looks fit even at the age of sixty plus. His eyes speak a lot and Chiranjeevi does the same in Acharya as well. He does not get to do more action but carries the intensity needed for the character. Pooja Hegde looks lovely and gives her best to the film. Her role is not that great but still. Pooja manages to make an impact.
Ram Charan is high on the success of his last film RRR where he was praised for his acting. In this film too, he has a major role and gives a solid performance. In a few scenes, he has dominated his father as well. The scenes between father and son are such a joy to watch on screen. Especially the way Chiranjeevi and Charan danced, is a sight that is not to be missed. Sonu Sood looks misfit in the role of the main villain.
Technicalities
The scale of the film is so huge and one can see it in every frame. The temple town set up is out of the world and one cannot believe it when the team says that everything we see is a set. The camerawork by Madhie is amazing and shows the big scale in an amazing manner. The way the fights have been composed looks good.
The way dances between the father and son have composed is also very good. The dialogues and editing are decent but the screenplay is dull in the first half as nothing much emotional and intense happens. The writing is okay and the way the character of Ram Charan is connected to the whole story looks good.
Analysis
Acharya is about a temple town that is filled with atrocities. To make a change, Acharya enters the scene and starts his revolt. This aspect is not established that well in the initial part of the film. Perhaps, Sonu Sood's role should have been even more menacing, to say the least. it is only at the interval point the film catches fire.
Ram Charan makes an entry and from there, the film means business. The flashback episodes and the way father and son scenes are shot look so nice on-screen. It is the first time that they have acted in such lengthy roles and director Koratala Siva needs to be applauded for his narration and the way he showed Charan and his dad.
The way Charan's character gets much weight and how all that is balanced at the end is very good. There are a few errors in the film as the emotional baggage is not that great. The stronger drama would have made matters quite good for the fans and general audience.
Scale-wise, Acharya has everything but there are a few drawbacks in terms of narration that make the film go down but the star presence of Charan and his dad Chiranjeevi cover up everything.
Final Word
Acharya is an intense drama that has some good action and a solid star presence. Though the film is weak in its story, the megastar Chiranjeevi and Ram Charan make sure that the audience forgets all the glitches and enjoys their mass ride filled with lovable moments between the father and son.
