Dr. Arora-Gupt Rog Visheshagya review: quirky & ambitious take on love, sex, lust & trust.
What: Dr. Arora-Gupt Rog Visheshagya - Imtiaz Ali’s Love Aaj Kal gets a twist from a sex specialist.
OTT web series Dr. Arora-Gupt Rog Visheshagya synopsis
About the life and times of Gupt Rog Visheshagya (sex specialist) Dr. Arora (Kumud Mishra) a traveling sex consultant and his various patients. A street smart young wannabe politician Devendar Thakur (Gaurav Parajuli), a cryptic sex guru Swami Paramsneh (Raj Arjun), SP Tej Pratap Singh Tomar (Ajitesh Gupta), a high profile sex worker, a teenager whose narrow minded father a local publisher Dinkar Bagla (Vivek Mushran) is against such doctors and considers the topic of sex as a taboo.
‘Erected’ on the problems related with sex - considered as taboo, director Sajid Ali, Archit Kumar on a story by Imtiaz Ali and screenplay by Arif Ali, Imtiaz Ali, Divya Johry and Divya Prakash Dubey churn eight episodes of an intriguingly quirky drama of emotions that tackles the taboo subject of sex education, erection problems etc.
It’s an Imtiaz Ali’s creation and the déjà vu of Love Aaj Kal is felt during those portions in sepia tone, for a while I thought this could have also been titled as “Ek Aashiq Ka Badla” (elaborating more will make me guilty of adding spoilers), anyhow Dr. Arora-Gupt Rog Visheshagya is interestingly ambitious and careful both.
The plot which opens many gates and invites all kinds of raunchiness, erotica or kya kya and considering it’s premiering on an OTT platform, still caution is observed and that deserves a good pat on the back of the makers.
The directors Sajid Ali, Archit Kumar working on the screenplay by Arif Ali, Imtiaz Ali, Divya Johry and Divya Prakash Dubey make the audience travel through multiple genres – dramedy with a ting of sex comedy and a parody, laced by a love story with a twist).
Dr. Arora-Gupt Rog Visheshagya is not that feel good sex LOL rom com based in the Hindi heartland as Shubh Mangal Saavdhan, Dr. Arora-Gupt Rog Visheshagya is rather serious and is based primarily in Bundelkhand region – the doctor travels from Jhansi to Morena ( famous for the Chambal region –the hideout of dreaded dacoits of its times). Humor is there and it’s sly and at couple of places dark.
The setting, environment and art direction is perfect and production values are first rate.
Music by Anand Bhaskar and Ajay Jayanthi is in sync. Cinematography by Rajesh Shukla is superb. Editing by Manish Jaitly is quite good. Costumes by Suveera Ambade are apt.
Kumud Mishra is brilliant. Gaurav Parajuli is fantastic.
Vidya Malavade is fabulous. Ajitesh Gupta is very good. Sandeepa Dhar shines. Vivek Mushran has its moments.
Shekhar Suman makes his presence felt.
Raj Arjun as Swami Paramsneh is completely off putting. Interesting character, showing it as a caricature might have been the idea but it fails to work. I was looking for more humour. Dr. Arora-Gupt Rog Visheshagya is not for the strict traditional mindset. The ending should have ended with a hint.
Dr. Arora-Gupt Rog Visheshagya is a quirky & ambitious take on love, sex, lust & trust. It’s centered on sex – the thing that is secretly explored the most worldwide but not discussed that widely in open. I sincerely hope there is more ‘act’ baki and believe the announcement of Dr. Arora-Gupt Rog Visheshagya season 2 is round the corner. Going with an optimistic 3.5, Dr. Arora-Gupt Rog Visheshagya is streaming on SonyLIV from July 22, 2022.
