Citadel season 1 review: Priyanka Chopra Jonas and Richard Madden up the ante to a new level in a swashbuckling high adrenaline knockout

Citadel synopsis
Eight years ago, Citadel fell. The independent global spy agency—tasked to uphold the safety and security of all people—was destroyed by operatives of Manticore, a powerful syndicate manipulating the world from the shadows. With Citadel’s fall, elite agents Mason Kane (Richard Madden) and Nadia Sinh (Priyanka Chopra Jonas) had their memories wiped as they narrowly escaped with their lives. They’ve remained hidden ever since, building new lives under new identities, unaware of their pasts. Until one night, when Mason is tracked down by his former Citadel colleague, Bernard Orlick (Stanley Tucci), who desperately needs his help to prevent Manticore from establishing a new world order. Mason seeks out his former partner, Nadia, and the two spies embark on a mission that takes them around the world in an effort to stop Manticore, all while contending with a relationship built on secrets, lies, and a dangerous-yet-undying love.
I have the first two episodes of the first season and the creator David Weils and directors Newton Thomas, Jessica Yu, Anthony Russo and Joe Russo confidently create a high voltage pulse rising rush with style and substance.
The Russo brothers – people behind the mammoth success of The Avengers assure that their high-profile creditability is maintained and the required distinction is achieved in the Ott crime spy domain.
Citadel opens with a bang – stylishly gorgeous Priyanka Chopra Jones as Nadia Sinh makes an entry inside a running luxurious train compartment in Italy. The suave Mason Kane (Richard Madden) crosses path. They both are on a mission and within a couple of minutes its show time. Breath-taking action sequence inside the train promises that this is going to be something unmissable.
From the first two episodes it is established that Citadel will be a winner all the way unless they terribly mess it up in the remaining four episodes. All the demands of a top commercial blockbuster spy series are met and the desired hook is with an edge is maintained giving it a unique flavour in its genre.
The action sequences are superb and especially Priyanka Chopra Jones is a treat to watch kicking the hell out of the bad guys in a terrific action avatar. In the two episodes Priyanka was mind blowing in the two action sequences in the second episode.
Richard Madden gets an emotional family connect and he is fabulous both in the emotional and action moments.
Stanley Tucci and Lesley Manville have important roles and they are competent.
Citadel season 1 final words
The first two episodes are addictive enough to make any action spy drama junkie go restless for the remaining episodes and same has happened to me over here. It’s that good. I go with an overwhelming 4 stars (it could have been more but the four episodes are remaining).
