Yo Yo Honey Singh Famous review

From 20 to 15 to 12 joints a day to a revival of normalcy, Punjabi Pop sensation Honey Singh’s life is nothing sort of a crazy resurrection which can be best described as an odyssey from setbacks to sets.

Without wasting any time, director Mozez Singh forays into the ecstatic success of Honey Singh, who moved the cultural gravity of pop music. Honey honestly admits that he was just a plain sound engineer back in 2005 and had literally no pulse of the rising pop scene. From the digitally restored archives, he shows the first machine which he used to compose his music. The camera caresses his beefed-up body while he visibly glows spotting the nerves bulging beneath his shoulders.

Honey’s rise to the crest of popularity and fandom followed by his decline owing to his mental illness and psychosis is revealed with utmost honesty in the narrative that runs for 80 minutes. You find him choked when he recounts his experiences and upheavals. A barrage of maa-behen swears may enshroud the exteriors of the west-Delhi Punjabi munda but his vulnerability overarches a heartwarming tale of love and support that he derived from his family comprising his parents and sister.

At one point, Goney says that he derives his musical strength from the eyes of his fans. Eye contacts serve his dopamine and confidence. The coverage may be less from the perspective of his life’s length and breadth, but Mozez offers an emotional depth and makes his life story accessible with a personal glance. The plethora of music tours, the infamous fiasco with Shah Rukh Khan in LA and the marital discord with ex-wife Shalini coupled with accusations of domestic violence also find their spots along with a testimonial from Salman Khan in the decoding of the Desi Kalaakar’s journey.

Abundance of visual footages from his past concerts, the rendezvous with his close-knit people and his humble reflections eminently power the narrative in Mozez Singh’s documentary on his life. But in this reflection, we get to know the cure and the remedy, not the exact cause. The layers of mystery around his public disappearance are not explored much.

Towards the end, Honey asserts, “I will fuckin’ blow the world with my music!”. This is a sheer testimony to the grit and resilience of an artist and the sign of a rebel emerging from the brink of a collapse.

Going with 3.5 stars out of 5 for YoY o Honey Singh: Famous. The 1-hour 20-minute film is streaming on Netflix from 20th December 2024.
