Vijay 69 review: inspiring, touching but why foul mouthed?!

What: ‘Vijay 69’ – Anupam Kher excels in an inspiring, touching but foul-mouthed tale of life, love dreams and determination.

Vijay 69 movie synopsis

A sixty-nine-year-old adventurous, foul-mouthed former swimming coach and national level bronze medalist Vijay Matthew (Anupam Kher) decides to create a record by participating in a triathlon at the age of sixty-nine.

Vijay 69 movie review

Netflix

It is said that "the tongue is sharper than a two-edged sword" and when the tongue starts ranting randomly it ruins the goodness of the soul. Writer – Director Akshay Roy’s ‘Vijay 69’ suffers from the wrath of a foul-mouthed tongue in his heartfelt, inspiring coming of age ‘Vijay 69’ which has love, friendship, life, dreams determination, motivation but gets attacked by its own foul-mouthed tongue.

Why Vijay Matthew keeps on saying gaalis every now and then is unconvincing. Why bad words are necessary for an Ott release? ‘Vijay 69’ has such an inspiring, motivating subject of life, purpose, the elusive second chance that rarest of rare get in their life, happiness, friendships, positivity, the narrowing of generation gap, ‘Vijay 69’ is so full of hope.

Why Akshay Roy has to cut off his own audience by asking his protagonist to throw bad words at the drop of a hat, this discards a big section of the audience who need such motivation and inspiration the most – the kids, their parents, especially the women and elders at home in one word - family.

It’s not that am against the use of foul language in cinema, the use of such language has to come with proper conviction and justification.

Its not that ‘Vijay 69’ is a straight no, it’s a good film with heartfelt moments – the best between Anupam Kher and Mihir Ahuja (the youngest participant in the triathlon race). The bonding between Anupam Kher and Chunky Pandey is so adorable. The bubbly cuteness of Guddi Maruti is niece. The bonding between Anupam Kher and his friends, the relationship with his daughter, his never-ending love for his wife (played by Ekavali Khanna) and the nostalgia provided by the number ‘Aage Bhi Jaane Na Tu’ from the classic ‘Waqt’ directed by Yash Chopra makes ‘Vijay 69’ a must watch but with a caution.

Apart from foul language, ‘Vijay 69’ also suffers from cinematic liberties which are evident.

Performance

Anupam Kher excels and he is just perfect.

Mihir Ahuja is endearing.

Chunky Pandey is fabulous.

Good to see Guddi Maruti after a long time and she is very good.

Ekavali Khanna in a special appearance makes her presence felt.

Vrajesh Hirjee provides the funny quirks

Vijay 69 movie review – final words

Imagine siting in an entertaining, inspirational session where you are getting life lessons but the conductor is delivering all the goodness by unnecessarily speaking foul language from time to time.

In the world of Hindi mainstream cinema which has ruled by its dialogues for ages, be it the actor or the film, ‘Vijay 69’ commits a self-suicide almost in spite of having a good inspiring’ content due to its bad language uttered by protagonist.

Still after all the rant, I will go for a favorable three-star rating

1 for concept

1 for acting

1 for heartfelt moments

‘Vijay 69’ – A Netflix and YRF Entertainment Presentation, written and directed by Akshay Roy and produced by Maneesh Sharma for YRF Entertainment, will stream exclusively on Netflix from November 8, 2024
