Trial Period movie synopsis
Bullied in school, Romi (Zidane Braz) son of a divorcee single mother Ana (Genelia Deshmukh) demands a father to be hired as we order our household items, electronic equipment’s etc.
Ana has done everything she can do to raise her child, the Bengali Ana and her Punjabi neighbours played by Shakti Kapoor and Sheeba Chadha are also there to give love and support to Romi but Romi has now started asking questions about his father.
Enters the good Hindi speaking teacher from Uttar Pradesh Prajapati (Manav Kaul) as the papa on hire.
What happens next?
Director Aleya Sen (previous Dil Juunglee director, Badhaai Ho, producer) on her own story with screenplay by Kunwar Shiv Singh and Akshat Trivedi fills the film with heartfelt touching moments and has relevant conversations regarding parenting.
Trial Period explores the triangle between Ana, Romi and PD (Prajapati) beautifully, the arc goes through relatable emotions like love, jealousy, friendship when plans of Ana go against her expectations and Romi develops a bond with JD.
Emotional and motivational messages on parenting like standing on your own, gets delivered. Trial Period though has predictability in the relationship episode between Ana and PD but still it successfully holds your interest due to its maturity in the treatment.
The danger of getting preachy gets cleared as Aleya Sen handles the sensitive subject of bullying in a fine manner it ends up being populist but it works.
Performance
The profound chemistry between Manav Kaul and Genelia Deshmukh results in first rate performance from both of them.
Genelia adds charm, dignity, poise and relatability to her character and gives an endearing performance. The moment when she yells at Romi in jealously for repeatedly asking about JD is superb.
Manav Kaul is excellent as PD. The honest man from UP who is a good cook, knows yoga and wrestling finds his identity in the house of Anna and gets a child/friend Romi to give his life a purpose. The moment between Manav and Romi after that football match is a highlight.
Zidane Braz is a cute little bundle of talent that wins your heart with his sheer innocence.
Shakti Kapoor as the shopaholic neighbour is very good. Sheeba Chadha who plays Shakti Kapoor’s wife adds to the feel-good breeze.
Last but not the least Gajraj Rao in a short role makes his presence felt and adds smiles.
Nicely shot by Manoj Kumar Khatoi and decently edited by Shahnawaz Mosani. Trial Period music has a pleasantly picturised take home - Gole Male by Shreya Ghosal, Dev Negi, and Kaushik- Guddu
Final words
Trial Period is a niece feel good evening coffee with your family stirred by endearing performance with added cream of parenthood.
