What: Gehraiyaan movie review - Deepika Padukone in her OTT debut on prime video gives a knockout performance in a brave, searing & mature tale of desire, betrayal, love, lust, lost and ambition by Shakun Batra
OTT movie Gehraiyaan synopsis
Alisha Khanna (Deepika Padukone) a 30 something ambitious woman finds herself at a crossroads in life. Alisha’s six-year long relationship with Karan (Dhairya Karwa) has grown monotonous. Alisha a yoga expert is trying her best to develop her unique app while Karan is trying his luck as a writer.
Just when Alisha has started accepting her monotonous/unexciting life, her cousin Tia (Ananya Panday) spins a surprise with her fiancé Zain (Siddhant Chaturvedi).
Alisha finds an escape route in Zain’s initial playful flirtations which gradually turns into desire and more.
Alisha and Tia share a disturbing past while Tia seems to have moved over it, Alisha who is the elder is still fighting her childhood demons.
As Alisha and Zain come closer, they find themselves in a searing unending web of desire, betrayal, lust, ambition, morality, trust, love, lost in which Tia and Karan also get involved.
From the incredibly hear touching with a soul soothing twist Kapoor & Sons Shakun Batra gets mature and dwells in the human crises derived from human condition.
On the surface, Gehraiyaan and the way it has been promoted appears to be a tale of infidelity/extra martial affair of Alisha and Zain that rips their life and close people around them apart.
Digging deep into Gehraiyaan, the sensible audience will find the desire temptation of the characters to be free from bondages some of them created by their own decisions.
Gehraiyaan is more about choice, people, places and the spaces they demand in relationships, in a way whimsical in its approach here the so-called purity or say commitment faces the acid test and at times sadly seems naïve.
Writer Director Shakun Batra with his writing team Sumit Roy, Ayesha DeVitre and Yash Sahai add subtlety periodically and intertwine the conflict with right tension and care.
Notable for its uber cool atmosphere and the effortlessness where things start happening naturally, it’s not that feel good happy story, it’s a story of people trapped either by fate or their belief or by an illusion which later takes disturbing turns.
Deepika Padukone gives a knock out performance.
Ananya Panday is outstanding.

Gehraiyaan look deeply into the human traits of desire, betrayal, love, lust, lost and uncovers those putrefactions, such movies are not everyone’s cup of tea, but at times they are a statement on relationships and human conditions.
