Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms movie review: stunningly mythical and ambitious epic on good and evil
What: ‘Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms’ – the first installment of the planned trilogy by Wuershan is an ambitiously mounted and stunningly mythical epic action-packed drama that makes the wait for the following sequels eager.
Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms movie synopsis
Based on 16th-century Chinese novel “The Investiture of the Gods”, ‘Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms’ is a mythical war saga set 3000 years ago between immortals, monsters, and humans.
King Zhou (Fei Xiang) has killed the emperor after conspiring with a conniving fox demon. After seizing power, King Zhou turns cruel which leads him to face the wrath of Heaven. Now, it’s time for the gods to save the earth and an unlikely force is created to thwart the challenges from the evil King Zhou but things are not that easy as it seems.
‘The Investiture of the Gods’ the classical Chinese literature is an epic inspiration that has been reportedly adapted on screen several times. The 2019 animation ‘Nezha’ which features a mischievous demon-boy is the latest example.
Award winning director Wuershan ( ‘Mojin: The Lost Legend’, ‘The Butcher, the Chef and the Swordsman’, ‘Soap Opera’) is a visionary who thinks beyond the routine. The writer director along with his team of writers Jianan Ran, Ping Ran, Cao Sheng, in their screen adaptation of Zhonglin Xu’s calsical novel introduces us to multiple creatures, characters with dazzling visuals and amazing action. ‘Creation of the Gods I: Kingdom of Storms’ is that kind of mainstream film/cinema that tries to give something to everyone.
The on-screen adaptation is laced with complex characters and has enough twist and turns with eye popping visuals and fast paced action to keep the audience engaged throughout. Though there is a catch – the audience should have an interest in such grand epic fairytales about good, bad, God, humans, monsters otherwise it might be a yawn for those who don’t believe in such fantasies.
The scale, ambition is seen in the extravagant set designs, extraordinary action, the passion and the commitment to present the Chinese culture to the world in a grand way is commendable (kaash ‘Kalki 2898 AD’ bhi itni Indian hoti jitni yeh Chinese hai).
The CGI is fabulous and the way live action is mixed with CGI gives a different experience. Cinematography by Yu Wang is extraordinary. Editing by Ka-Fai Cheung, Yuan Du, and Shuo Huang maintains the pace and interest.
The performances are noteworthy especially Fei Xiang as King Zhou.
