“I’d like to thank the head of the festival and the director of the programming for the cinematic richness of the programme, for its diversity, for its complexity. It was intense. We saw seven films in the debutant competition, and 15 films in the international competition — the front window of the festival. 14 out of them had cinematic qualities, defaults and evoked vivid discussions. All of us were disturbed and shocked by the 15th film, The Kashmir Files. That felt like a propaganda, vulgar movie, inappropriate for an artistic competitive section of such a prestigious film festival. I feel totally comfortable to openly share these feelings here with you on this stage. In the spirit of this festival, can surely also accept a critical discussion, which is essential for art and life,” Lapid said in his speech.
The Kashmir Files
Written and directed by Vivek Agnihotri, The Kashmir Files, released on March 11, 2022 is based on the exodus of Kashmiri Pandits from the Valley in the 1990s.
Starring Anupam Kher in the lead role, the movie became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of 2022.
The Kashmir Files was made tax free by the government by several states ruled by the BJP government.
The Kashmir Files has reportedly earned around Rs 350 crore at the box office.
Vishal Verma in his review for Cineblues gave The Kashmir Files 4.5 stars and calling it a powerfully infuriating, shockingly devastating & emphatically human cinema said, “Vivek Agnihotri in his courageous, most powerfully relevant & finest work till date brings one of India’s biggest shame on humanity on screen. The Kashmir Files opens up the wounds of the cruelest dance of devil on Kashmiri Pandits – the genocide (1990) and in that opening of the bandage, we see the rotten ugly wounds of barbaric and inhuman atrocities on innocence Kashmiri Hindus – Kashmiri Pandit’s which scream about the unforgiving failure of the system – the government at that time, the media in its silence. Echoing the indifference in the idea and understanding of intolerance with an echo that finds chorus in every pain, scream & wound.
