Legendary actor, dancer Mithun Chakraborty to be honoured with Dadasaheb Phalke Award

India’s acting and dancing legend Mithun Chakraborty, will be honoured with the Dadasaheb Phalke Award. He will receive the award at the 70th National Film Awards ceremony on October 8.

A chemistry graduate from Kolkatta and a former Naxalite, Mithun Chakraborty aka Mithun Da has had an illustrious career in film industry spanning 48 years and it still continues.

Beginning with master Mrinal Sen’s 1976 national award winner ‘Mrigayaa’ which also fetched Mithun his first national award in his debut.

Mithun later on got recognised as a dancing star and there was a time when Mithun was called as poor man’s Amitabh’ by the film industry due to his popularity, success and less fees in comparison with the iconic Mr. Bachchan.

Dance and action were his forte and with blockbusters like ‘Surakshaa’, ‘Disco Dancer’, ‘Dance Dance’, ‘Pyar Jhukta Nahin’, ‘Kasam Paida Karne Wale Ki’, ‘Commando’, etc, Mithun became a rage.    

Mithun Chakraborty is a former Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament, recipient of three National Film Awards Mrigayaa (1977), (Vivekananda (1998), Tahader Katha (1992), Mithun Chakraborty was awarded Padma Bhushan, the third-highest civilian honour, by the Government of India. Mithun Da is the record holder in the Limca Book of Records for 19 movie releases as lead actor in the year 1989, and the record is still unbroken in Bollywood.

His dance songs ‘I am a Disco Dancer’ has become immortal in the Indian Film Industry.

In future, Mithun Da will be seen in ‘Shastri’, ‘Lahore1947’, ‘Housefull 5’ ‘Pinjara’ ‘Riwaj’, ‘Baap’ and ‘The Delhi Files’.
