Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video Review: A quirky comedy that underlines a relevant message

What: ‘Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video’ – writer director Raaj Shaandilyaa takes the best from Rajkummar Rao, Triptii Dimri and of course Vijay Raaz to give us a decent quirky comedy that underlines a relevant message.

Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video movie synopsis

Its circa 1997, Vicky (Rajkummar Rao) is a popular mehendi artiste in Rishikesh and Vidya (Tripti Dimri) is a doctor. The childhood best buddies Vicky and Vidya are now lovers and after a funny incident, they get married.

The newly wed Vicky and Vidya skip the family suggestion of visiting Mata Vaishno Devi and land in Goa instead to spend their honeymoon. Attracted by a newspaper clip which mentions about foreign couples recording their intimate moments, decides to record a similar video with together as a keepsake for the future.

However, their plan goes awry when the CD with the video gets stolen. The couple tries retrieve the stolen CD but things go out of control. On the other hand, during the investigation, Vicky’s unmarried hot sister Chanda Rani (Mallika Sherawat) makes the police inspector in charge – played by Vijay Raaz go bonkers over her charm.

Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video movie review

‘Dreamgirl’ fame Raaj Shaandilyaa continues his way of sly humour with subtle feminism in ‘Vicky Vidya Ka Who Wala Video’ lacking genuine outright laughs but peppered with some tickling smiling humour, ‘Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video’ hugely benefits from the energy and chemistry between Rajkummar Rao and  Triptii Dimri and amazing spontaneity of Vijay Raaz to keep the interest of the audience alive.

The story highlights the viral ‘video’ mms scandals that turns the lives of the victim’s upside down. However, the message after a while gets preachy and lack of outrightly hilarious moments does affect the flow, though humour does come out from moments and from characters and situations but still my hunger for laughter as expected from a Raaj Shaandilyaa comedy movie was not completely fulfilling. The retro Kumar Shanu songs gave a nostalgic feeling.

The actors save the day in ‘Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video’ and apart from Vijay Raaz, Tripti Dimri and Rajkummar Rao, Kaveri (Archana Patel) as the house help is fantastic, with Archana Puran Singh, Mukesh Tiwari, Saharsh Kumar Shukla, Rakesh Bedi, Tiku Talsania, Ashwini Kalsekar chipping in with valuable support, and it was good to see Mallika Sherawat back on screen doing what she is known for. ‘Vicky Vidya Ka Who Wala Video’ remains safe otherwise it could have been a disaster.

Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video movie review – Final words

A comedy that comes with a relevant message is a tough one to pull and Raaj Shaandilyaa manages to deliver a decent one time watch but one thing made me wondering till the end – the tagline of ‘parivaarik’ aka family and entire family including kids was something overenthusiastic. ‘Vicky Vidya Ka Who Wala Video is for family yes but family with ‘grown up’ kids.

Going with a generous 3.5 stars (one star extra for the acting especially Vijay Raaj)

Vicky Vidya Ka Woh Wala Video is running in theatres from October 11, 2024
