Singham Again review : not Lord Ram but Ranveer Singh saves Rohit Shetty’s cop universe from sudden death
What: ‘Singham Again’ – Rohit Shetty’s touted saviour of drowning careers of Ajay Devgn, Akshay Kumar, Tiger Shroff, Ranveer Singh, Arjun Kapoor and of course Rohit Shetty himself gets somehow saved by Ranveer Singh’s clowny acts in the second half.
Singham Again movie synopsis
‘Singham Again’ the third part of Rohit Shetty’s popular cop franchise ‘Singham’ also called Singham 3 is also the fifth installment of Shetty's Cop Universe franchise.
‘Singham Again’ begins from where ‘Sooryavanshi’ ended. DCP Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn) captures Omar Hafeez (Jackie Shroff) and his grandson Zubair Hafeez aka Danger Lanka (Arjun Kapoor) comes for his rescue.
Zubair kidnaps Singham’s wife Avni (Kareena Kapoor Khan) and Singham goes to Lanka to rescue her. Here the screenplay writers - Yunus Sajawal, Abhijeet Khuman, Kshitij Patwardhan, Sandeep Saket, Anusha Nandakumar and Rohit Shetty on the story by Kshitij Patwardhan incorporate Ramayana in Singham’s rescue act and introduces characters inspired from Ramayana like DCP Veer Sooryavanshi (Akshay Kumar) – inspired from Garuda, Ranveer Singh as ACP Sangram "Simmba" Bhalerao – inspired from Hanuman, Tiger Shroff as ACP Satya Bali inspired from Laxman, Kareena Kapoor Khan as Avni Bajirao Singham – inspired from Sita, Deepika Padukone as DCP Shakti Shetty maybe inspired from Sugriv it’s not clear.
And Arjun Kapoor as Danger Lanka/Zubair Hafeez inspired from Ravana.
The desperation to churn a winner at the box office is evident. The inclusion of stars like Akshay, Tiger, Ranveer, Deepika and even after that the director and his team of seven writers including the director himself bring in Lord Ram to ensure safe returns on the mega festive season of Diwali.
Par Rohit Shetty ji ne ek bahut badi bhool kar dali – Rohit Shetty makes a circus instead of a sequel, the circus tries too many things. It begins in propagating the change Kashmir – Kashmir ka youth badal raha hai says a young guy from the bunch of crowds gathered when Omar Hafeez (Jackie Shroff) is taken into custody and the same is repeated by Bajirao Singham (Ajay Devgn) when he interrogates Omar.
Then the movie starts educating about Ramayana and makes an attempt to convince the gathering in the film and outside the screen that Ramayan is not mythology its history. No harm in spreading the goodness and great virtues of Maryada Purshottam Lord Ram and the initial incorporation of Ramayan along with the abduction of Avni urf Sita (Kareena Kapoor Khan) and the deadly entry of Ravan – Arjun Kapoor is tight and engaging. The following avatars – Tiger Shroff as Laxman, Ranveer Singh as Hanuman and yes, the famous daya from CID (Dayanand Shetty) as Jatayu gives a feeling that something grand and extraordinary is in the making this Diwali but alas after this great establishments, Rohit Shetty ki jholi ho jati hai khali.
As soon as Arjun Kapoor opens his mouth the terror gets evaporated in a snap. The incorporation of Ramayana is on and off. Instead the way Singham has inspired Simba, Shakti and Satya and the movie does shows a flash of that brilliant idea. This could have have made a far better Cop Universe than this khichdi cum bhaji pav plus missal of this cop universe which after interval fails to rise.
Remove Ranveer Singh from second half and you will have apaar boredom in Singham Again which would have haunted you again and again but like a true sankat mochan Ranveer Singh saves Rohit Shetty’s cop universe from a sudden death.
In spite of flat jokes at times, Ranveer Singh infectious clowny act makes you invested in this action drama which is losing its spine rapidly. The confrontation between Ajay Devgn and Arjun Kapoor is as Thanda as ice kept in freezer.
The almost one note acting by Ajay Devgn who seems to be in Singham mode 24X7 if we remove the initial moments with his family doesn’t help either. Akshay gives a strange expression when he appears on screen and meets Ajay and how Garuda avatar has landed is not explained either. Ditto with Deepika Padukone’s character – she is the metaphor of which character of character we don,t know, maybe her character has nothing to do with Ramayan and she is another param bhakth of Singham sir. Anyhow, the writers should have made it clear. Nevertheless, Deepika impresses so does Kareena and Tiger Shroff is also good.
But no wow moments in spite of terrific action and excellent cinematography, the audience surely wanted some more and better. How could Rohit Shetty do such galti at times when he has to bounce back with deafening noise. Thanks to the first half, and Ranveer Singh in the second Singham Again does not ends up as a bad movie. But honestly, Rohit Shetty has cashed on Singham’s legacy, the stars popularity, Lord Ram and the festive season. Its corporate filmmaking at its lowest and in order to keep the franchise alive, Salman Khan’s Chulbul Pandey is added as the forthcoming attraction in Rohit Shetty’s cop universe. And honestly the promotion/announcement of Salman Khan is flat and as poker face as the actor’s expressions.
Singahm Again movie review – final words
Interestingly, in ‘Simba’ Ajay Devgn aka Singham comes in his grand style to rescue Simba aka Ranveer Singh and uplift the franchise. Ironically, in Singham Again Ranveer Singh aka Simba clowns around and saves Ajay Devgn aka Ajay Devgn from embarrassment inside the theatre and at the box office.
Still after all the rant going with a favourable three stars due to the following reasons.
1: I liked the first half
2: Am in festive mood
3 : still I want to give one more chance to Rohit Shetty, hope he finds his mojo now at least and hoping that Singham and Chulbul will khilao sab gul in Rohit Shetty’s next Singham/cop universe
Happy Diwali
Singham Again is running in theatres all over.
