Sunflower Season 2 review: While the performances bloom, the series is needless and bereft of excitement

Sunflower Season 2 - Inspired from the American black comedy, Only Murders In The Building, Sunflower showed considerable promise in the first season where it chronicled a mysterious death of Mr Kapoor in the eponymous apartment in Mumbai, leading the needle of suspicion to point towards Sonu, played by the delectable Sunil Grover.

The new season of Sunflower ticks off with Sonu’s re-emergence in the same society in a more mentally stunted form, complimented with a new elusive member Rosie, played by Adah Sharma, who is a bar dancer and supposed to have inherited late Kapoor’s lavish flat. Contrary to the first season which was directed by Vikas Bahl, this one is directed by Naveen Gujral who propels the narrative with the investigation led by the baffled cops – played by Ranvir Shorey and Girish Kulkarni.

Here they are in total chaos, when they discover that Kapoor’s corpse had one eye missing and feel that there may be more undiscovered murder motives. Just like the season meanders lethargically, new characters pop up adding to the confusion and tedium.

The only solace is Sunil Grover who brings an inherent charm to the flawed and fumbling, OCD-afflicted Sonu and his buffoonery with the raunchy and saucy character Rosie played seductively and energetically by Adah Sharma. Some jokes land well, but most of the scenes are unfunny and silly and lose the steam of humor. But Sonu is himself a paradox – sometimes he comes across as a super intelligent Mamma’s boy and sometimes he is simply irritating.

Sunflower Season 2 – final words

I particularly enjoyed the flirtatious advances by Mrs Ahuja (Radha Bhatt) on Inspector Digendra (Shorey) while Mr. Ahuja rots in the lock up – there is a natural ease that Bhatt exudes while the antics of the latter is always a winner. These are some of the perks in the serpentine mystery that is bereft of excitement and punch. Ashish Vidyarthi and Mukul Chadha are systemically underutilized as Mr Iyer and Mr. Ahuja respectively.

I go with 2.5 stars out of 5 for Sunflower Season2. Despite a clutch of good actors, the show struggles to keep its heft under a mediocre execution.

The 8-part series is streaming on Zee5 from 1st March 2024.
